Who Remembers Schooner Tuna?

In the movie, this was the marketing genius that saved the day. In real life? Who knows, but, here we go. “I would NEVER share….” As a “leader” we get put on pedestals of perfection, image, excellence. As a young child I didn’t have the words for it but I sensed the incongruence between the message from the pulpit and the words in red taught at my religious school - and I did something in my little 3rd grade way about it. With little filter, and not much capacity for “acting,” I’ve been showing up this way here on social media since my very first day here in 2008. It’s the “in-my-bones-core-value” of congruence & transparent leadership. You deserve to know the truth! Why? Because for 20+ years I have seen the pain & internalized shame caused by holding one’s self to impossible standards. So the truth is, my business is wobbling. For over 20 years I’ve had a mostly solid gross and net revenue. Legitimate sustainable “success” and longevity in a business where many fail. 3 years ago I took some time and space and allowed my business to shrink not foreseeing the market shift (or the impact of having a heart attack). I cut business expenses from 7000 a month to under 2000. In 2017 my husband and I down sized our personal life and expenses to maximise and plan for the future by shifting in the present. So when I came back, all ready to REBLOOM in 2024, with new physical limitations and capacity - it took me a while to see the data, the climate, and my personal responsibility in what is. My brain had these all jumbled together. But I have a tool for sorting all that :). I see clearly now. I work with many small business owners - and their clients have cut contracts - one friend lost 200k in corporate contracts, others rosters are struggling. Government grants that funded coaching programs pulled until this tariff stuff is over. Story after story. There are a FEW coaches I know who “say” their income is the best it has been for years. Clap. Clap. Clap. There are two of I know who are legit chopping wood and carrying water and keeping it going. And one who has way to many NOT RIGHT fit clients and is suffocating even through the cash is good. And, there are MANY I know who would NEVER allow the appearance of a wobble to show. That’s what leaders do, they hold the vision. The slick, glossy, contrived vision. Impossible ideals to keep the grind going. Well, I’ve never been good at slick, glossy, or airbrushed. I’m good at real, mo-fos. Not many of us were taught to STRUGGLE BETTER - and often that is what I am helping my clients do. For 20 years I have held the stories of the shiny happy faces you all are comparing yourself to on stages, and on these social media screens. I am a process expert, a practice expert, a strategic genius, and full of scrappy hope in between days where my emotions and fears melt down. __ A client came to me recently: “Help me clear this spiritual block to making money.” Dude! It’s NOT a spiritual or mental block. The market of the moment for most of us is DIFFERENT. Yes. I wrote that 4 times. Nervous systems are, in general, tapped out. As one client recently said, my resilience bucket is empty. Ooof, I feel ya! What the heck happened (to me): Had I not exhausted my savings (built up for emergencies) covering for the emergency, after emergency, after emergency - I would be sailing instead of scrambling through this strange market. This market context was preceded by my personal context and that took my revenue down 85%. Life happens to all of us. It is what it is. And with that, who will I be, what are my options, and what will I do. <—and that takes bucket loads of mental and physical energy. I’m scrappy. I was scrappy when slinging paint and wild and free in 2014, and I am scrappy in 2025 determined to figure this out bit by bit. I’m sticking with the foundations and fundamentals. I’m adjusting pricing - and experimenting with offers, both as a coach, and as an artist. I’m betting on myself. For now, more pay what you can coaching sessions (min fifty bucks).
